Starting your links campaign without proper keyword research

Before you start any kind of link campaign or promotion for your website, you need to exactly identify the theme of your site, the pages you will be promoting and using as the landing pages and the keywords you will be using in your link texts as anchors. A properly carried out keyword search can help you obtain desired results quickly and effectively on the Search Engines for your target keywords and phrases, without wasting time.

Using the same Anchor texts for all your links

When you look for sites to link to you, make sure you find websites which are related to the theme of your website in some way or the other. This will not only help you in getting good quality links, but will also help drive traffic to your website from the linking site as your site will be of interest to the users of that website too.

Sending bulk emails and submitting forms

Using automated softwares to send emails in large quantities for link exchange or linking can negatively affect your websites image. Sending unsolicited Bulk emails in large quantities are actually considered spam and the reader won’t even bother to read the email. Similarly, using auto submission tools to fill forms on sites or submit comments on blogs are also considered spam and should be avoided at all costs.

Getting too many links to your site in a short amount of time

Another thing to avoid in your links campaign is getting lots of links to your site in a short amount of time. Search engines may consider that you got lots of paid links to your site all of a sudden to improve the rankings or Google PageRank for your website. Getting too many links for a website in a short amount of time can make your site end up in the sandbox effect or heavily penalized. So this is something you would want to avoid at all costs.

Getting links from high PR sites only

Usually, webmasters and website owners who want to improve their website rankings quickly would go for getting links from high PR websites and web pages. This should be done carefully, and links should be taken from low PR websites also, to make the effort look as natural as possible. Getting links from high PR pages and sites only can trigger an alarm for your website.

Paid links

Google is heavily penalizing websites which buy or sell links to pass PageRank, as buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in the search results. If you plan to buy links for your website, make sure you make them look as natural as possible to avoid any search engine penalties at a later stage.
