There are a number of HTML Tags which you can use on your web pages which can be beneficial for SEO purposes. These tags include the bold tag or strong tag, represented with <b></b> and <strong></strong> in HTML, italics tag which is represented with <i></i> in HTML code and emphasis tag which is represented by <em></em> in HTML code.

Both the bold and italics tag are used to highlight keywords within the text content on the website pages for both the users as well as for the search engines. Large font is also used to make some keywords and headings prominent on a web page. These tags are used for styling purposes and to highlight important keywords and phrases from the rest of the text on a webpage.

Search Engines give some weight and importance to the keywords used in bold/strong and emphasis/italics tags for SEO purposes. They can also pick the theme of the page by looking at the important keywords in a web page which might be repeated multiple times in the content, or highlighted by using bold and italics tags. However, the choice of using <b> or <strong> is completely up to you and both have same weight given by the search engines. Similarly, both <em> and <i> can be used to put emphasis on a keyword, and they are treated equally by the Search Engines.

Some webmasters and SEO experts argue about the importance of these tags for Search Engine Optimization. Some feel that they are no longer considered by Search Engines in their ranking algorithms, while others feel that using them on a website will help readability of the text on the web page and will have no harm in using them. Therefore, using Bold/Strong and Emphasis/Italics tags can be beneficial for formatting purposes and to highlight some keywords or text for both the readers as well as for the Search Engines.
