Web Directory

A web directory is a kind of website on the World Wide Web that specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. It displays web sites by categories and sub-categories. Web directories are totally different from Search Engines which display a list of web pages if you a type a key word. The categorization does not depend upon one or two pages, but instead it depends on the entire website, its theme and content. Web directories are usually maintained by humans and site owners are usually allowed to submit their websites to the web directories directly and then let editors view for its inclusion to the directory.

Some of the popular examples of web directories are:

  • Yahoo Directory
  • DMOZ (Open Directory Project)
  • Best of the Web Directory

RSS Directories

RSS directories are similar to usual web directories, but only being different on the basis of information in the form of RSS feeds instead of links to websites.

Search Engines

Designed to search information on the World Wide Web, Search Engines may show results in the form of web pages, images and other type of files during search on the Internet. Unlike web directories, search engines are not maintained by humans but they operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithm and human contribution.

Some examples of famous Web Search Engines are:

  • Google
  • Yahoo Search
  • MSN
  • AltaVista
  • Ask Jeeves

Importance of Search Engines and Web Directories for SEO

Since a lot of major Search Engines and Web Directories are well-ranked over the internet, it helps in driving traffic towards your website if your website is listed in the major search engines and web directories on the internet when you submit your site. They help in improving a websites link popularity as well as directory submissions are considered a good way to build links for a website.

There are also many people who use web directories to go directly to the web page they’re looking for as websites are placed categorically in Web Directories. Web Directories actually boost your website’s visibility among that vast network of unlimited websites.

Search Engines on the other hand are very important for SEO purposes. A webpage can be located by only entering a keyword or a key phrase in the search engines. Web traffic can easily be turned towards your website if you have used the right amount and appropriate keywords in your website to take benefit from SEO.
