It is linking to a page deep within another website instead of that websites main page or home page. It is a great source of increasing your websites visibility and its ranking over the search engines.

Deep linking boosts up the usability of a website as some new internet users and other regular visitors may easily find what they are looking for by going directly to a page within a site by clicking on its deep link.

Deep Linking may be discouraged by many large companies on their websites as it allows visitors to go directly to a particular page of interest and avoid their sponsored advertising that may be a source of profitability for the company.
