You need to make sure that your website has a consistent homepage URL no matter how it is linked from other websites or what is typed in the browser. If you change file names, move pages around or need a technique for webpage redirection, 301 redirect is the most efficient and spider/visitor friendly strategy for the purpose. The code “301″ is interpreted as “moved permanently”. It is easy to implement and preserves your search engine rankings since the next time the search engine robots will crawl your site they will automatically detect the 301 redirect and will follow to go to the moved or redirected page.
Use a 301 redirect to redirect the non www version of your website to the www version of the website. This avoids 2 different versions of your website home page being indexed by the search engines.
